The Pilates Sit Up (‘Roll Up’) Is All About the Inner Abs!
This is the chief reason pro athletes do Pilates: it works certain core muscles better than any other exercise, and the inner abs (transverse abdominus) are one of these special core muscle groups.
One of the reasons we consider Joseph Pilates the ‘Einstein of Fitness’ is his unique sit up, because it is the only exercise on the planet that targets the inner abs. And when we strengthen the inner abs, they work with the outer abs to increase our strength in an incredible way without extra muscle mass and bulk. In other words with strong inner abs we can be stronger without being bigger and heavier!
The secret is to do it correctly!
The Pilates sit up, known as the ‘Roll Up,’ is difficult to do at first and not usually presented simply and clearly the way Joseph Pilates taught. Sidebar: we here at GetYourPilatesOn cry loud and often for our teacher training courses to teach us all how to make Pilates quick and easy to learn, the way it was originally taught! As Einstein said, “If you can’t explain it simply, you don’t understand it well enough.”
Our colleague is one of the loudest voices about this issue – see his latest post about it here.
Now back to our look at an unusually easy way to learn this difficult Pilates exercise, the ‘Roll Up.’ Sit ups are not very difficult, BUT the PILATES sit up done CORRECTLY is difficult at first. Here is our colleague with a brief presentation of what we believe is the simplest presentation of this difficult and extremely important exercise.
